Whether you are vegan or not, it is important to read labels on the packages of food you intend on purchasing. I am sure we are all guilty of it because I personally did not start reading labels until I became vegan!  Another reason most people do so is for allergy purposes.

I feel it’s important to read labels regardless of dietary restrictions. And when I say reading labels, it doesn’t whatsoever mean reading the front label of a package, as it could totally be misleading! You want to find the ‘ingredient’ list, usually located in the back of the package.

Here is an example I can share from a personal experience.

A few months ago, I asked my mother-in-law to grab vegan cheese from the store. She bought a package labeled ‘cheese alternative.’ (Refer to attached picture for visual.)

As much as it claimed to have been a cheese ‘alternative,’ when I read the ingredient list, it showed that it is made of dairy!

The lesson to take from this experience is NOT to look for answers at the front label of a package! It’s always important to read the list of ingredients, usually located in the back of the package. Don’t be afraid to google some ingredients that you may have never heard of.  Knowledge is power!
